Eastern Germany - Dresden

Finally a long week-end with a visit to a friend in Berlin. Actually, my first aim was to discover Dresden. It became a big adventure, since the train drivers were on strike. This was not supposed to affect long distance trains, but it still did. The train left Berlin with a delay of 35 minutes, had to stop in small villages in-between and arrive in Dresden more than one hour later than planned. And it was the same again for the journey back. Welcome to developed Germany! But once in Dresden, it is so much worth it. It is a very untypical German city, in the sense that it has a lot of classical buildings. The town is called "Florenz of Germany". All this thanks to the kings August I and II.
The main buildings are the Zwinger as well as the castle on the main square. Very impressive indeed. There are also a nice opera house and an imposing cathedral. It is not only the big buildings, but also the details that are worth watching.

I like this little passage in-between the two main buildings and i find even more surprising these animal statues guarding a palace. The more recent past of the town is also still present. Indeed Dresden was in the communist part of Germany, the so-called "Democratic Republic". The reunification almost wiped out all the remnants of this period, but if one looks properly, there are some flashbacks.

The charming Trabants, which are still in use for tourists. In other cities, it is exotic to make a tour with horses, here it is with Trabants. I wonder which one is more reliable and faster. I am of course not asking which one is more ecological. And then this poster where Mickey Mouse is surrounded by a typical communist symbol. Funny, is not it?
